Five people were confirmed dead and more than 80 were missing after a ferry caught fire off Palawan island in the western Philippines on Wednesday night, according to the Philippine coast guard. The MV June Aster was in waters off Coron, Palawan when the incident occurred. Coast guard officials reported that 43 individuals were rescued from the vessel. Footage from the scene showed flames engulfing parts of the ferry, with responders placing victims in body bags. Coast guard spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab informed DZXL radio that the vessel's manifest listed 117 passengers and 17 crew members. Given the number of survivors and fatalities, over 80 people remained unaccounted for, and Cayabyab indicated that these figures might change as the rescue operation continued. The ferry had departed from Baseco in Manila and was en route to Coron. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
