Canada Enhances Air Defense Support for Ukraine During Zelenskyy's Visit > 월드뉴스

Canada announced on Thursday its commitment to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses and replenish its drone stocks during a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The meeting took place in Calgary, Alberta, where Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who hosted Zelenskyy, emphasized the deep historical ties between the two nations. Carney stated, “Canada will always be with you,” as the leaders signed an agreement aimed at establishing a “hundred-year partnership” that will focus on defense, critical minerals, and energy cooperation.

Carney noted that since 1893, when a significant wave of Ukrainians migrated to Canada, the two nations have shared a strong connection. Alberta is home to approximately 350,000 Canadians of Ukrainian descent. He remarked, “Ukrainians helped build Canada and Canadians will help rebuild Ukraine.” The support package includes C$350 million (US$253 million) through the United States’ Joint Ukraine Multinational Program to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, as Zelenskyy highlighted the urgent need for such measures amid increased Russian missile attacks.

Additionally, Canada will provide C$450 million in loan guarantees to improve Ukraine's energy supply, aimed at repairing damaged infrastructure and ensuring power for hospitals during the harsh winter months. Carney also announced that 30% of new Canadian drone production will be allocated to Ukraine. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude, stating that these drones would be deployed immediately to support Ukrainian soldiers.

Regarding potential peace negotiations, Zelenskyy indicated that substantive talks were unlikely during Russia’s current election period but mentioned plans to meet with Donald Trump in New York City later in September, potentially discussing strategies to revive stalled discussions on ending the conflict. After the Calgary meeting, Zelenskyy is scheduled to visit Banff, Toronto, and North Bay in Ontario for further engagements.
