One person has died and more than 30 are missing after a ferry sank off the coast of Vanuatu, according to the country’s government. The vessel, MV Matui, had set sail with over 40 passengers and crew on Friday from the island of Santo to Ambae island in very rough seas but did not reach its destination. Vanuatu Prime Minister Jotham Napat expressed condolences in a statement, saying, "Our hearts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones." Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with 15 individuals accounted for alive and one body recovered. An investigation into potential negligence has been initiated, focusing on the possibility that strong winds and marine warnings were ignored, along with concerns about the vessel being overloaded. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in New Caledonia is assisting with the search, which includes a French Armed Forces aircraft deployed on Sunday morning. Efforts are being concentrated on the south-east coast, where currents may have carried survivors.
