Government Initiative to Curb Sugar Intake
The Thai government has introduced a new campaign this month that encourages nine major coffee chains to halve the amount of sugar considered "normal sweetness" in their drinks. This initiative aims to reset taste preferences and improve public health by gradually reducing sugar levels in popular beverages. This shift comes in response to alarming statistics showing that sugary drinks are a significant contributor to the country's high sugar consumption.
Impact of Sugar Tax
Since the introduction of a sugar tax in 2017, which was fully implemented last year, there has been a noticeable impact on product reformulation. Manufacturers have lowered sugar levels in their products to avoid higher tax rates. Pojjana Hunchangsith, an assistant professor at Mahidol University, noted that while the tax has been effective in reducing sugar in pre-packaged drinks, it does not extend to street vendors and cafes, which remain significant sources of sugar intake for many Thais.
Consumer Behavior and Preferences
The latest government initiative aims to include some of the country's largest cafe chains. Many establishments already offer varying levels of sweetness on their menus, allowing customers to choose between 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% sweetness. Under the new guidelines, even the maximum sweetness option will be reduced by half, promoting healthier choices among consumers. Ann Thumthong, a Bangkok taxi driver, expressed support for the measures, noting that it can be challenging to avoid sugary options.
Encouraging Healthier Choices
Phumsith Mahasuweerachai, an associate professor at Khon Kaen University, conducted a study indicating that offering customers the choice of sweetness can lead to healthier decisions. His research found that simply providing options encourages people to opt for less sugary drinks. However, he noted that providing calorie information alone did not significantly influence consumer choices.
Wrap-up
As Thailand grapples with rising health issues linked to excessive sugar consumption, the government's proactive measures to reduce sugar in beverages signify a critical step toward improving public health. By collaborating with major coffee chains and addressing street vendor offerings, Thailand aims to foster a culture of healthier eating and drinking habits among its citizens.
