Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has received a $1 million pay increase as the city-state announced a significant one-off salary boost for government ministers. This adjustment raises ministerial salaries by over 60%, making them among the highest in the world. Wong's annual salary will now increase from S$2.2 million ($1.7 million) to S$3.6 million ($2.8 million). The deputy prime minister's salary will rise from S$1.8 million to S$3 million, while other cabinet ministers will see their salaries adjusted to between S$1.8 million and S$2.8 million, depending on their seniority and responsibilities. Wong stated he would donate the entirety of his salary increase to suitable charitable causes during his term. The pay raises come after 15 years without adjustments and follow recommendations from an independent committee. Wong acknowledged the sensitivity surrounding political salaries, noting that they exceed the earnings of most citizens and understanding public scrutiny. Nevertheless, he emphasized that good governance relies on attracting quality political leadership to ensure the country's future. Existing office holders will receive a one-off adjustment of up to 9% from October 15, based on individual circumstances, including performance.
