Dhesi emphasized that the UK government should not delay these decisions, especially after Prime Minister Andy Burnham appeared to commit to the 2030 target, only for Downing Street to later retract that assurance. He argued that the UK has a duty to defend the Falklands, where residents seek self-determination. Dhesi's comments followed a week of geopolitical turmoil, including a lack of clarity from the government regarding its defence policy. Although the government has committed to a longer-term NATO target of 3.5% by 2035, Dhesi stressed the urgency of committing to the 2030 goal, especially in light of international threats. Additionally, former US President Donald Trump suggested that American support for British sovereignty over the Falklands could change, further complicating the situation.
