The proposed law would establish a federal criminal offense for serious public desecration of the Australian flag, particularly in cases where an individual's actions are reckless or incite hatred, violence, or public disturbance. Additionally, it would criminalize the deliberate damage, defacement, or destruction of war memorials and other significant commemorative sites. Opposition leader Angus Taylor emphasized that the plan aims to uphold national pride. However, Assistant Foreign Minister Matt Thistlethwaite criticized the proposal as politically motivated, suggesting it reflects desperation to compete with One Nation. He noted that similar attempts have been rejected in the past due to concerns over freedom of speech and political expression.
