President Javier Milei has declared that favorable "winds of change" are supporting Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands during a televised address. He pointed to indications that former President Donald Trump might reconsider the United States' stance on the islands' sovereignty. Milei referenced Trump's recent comments about the U.S. re-evaluating its historic position regarding the Malvinas, the Argentinian name for the islands.

Milei criticized the United Kingdom, stating it is facing numerous crises, including migratory, demographic, and economic challenges, which he believes indicate a decline. In contrast, he described Argentina's future as "flourishing." During an interview with GB News, Trump was asked if he would support the UK in a potential dispute with Argentina over the Falklands and suggested that the UK had not been helpful in other matters, hinting at a lack of support.

While supporters anticipated Milei would announce U.S. endorsement of Argentina's sovereignty claim, he only referred to Trump's previous remarks. Trump stated he regularly reviews various positions, including that on the Falkland Islands. Milei interpreted Trump's response as a potential "threat" and emphasized that the U.S. recognizes Argentina as a reliable partner aligned with Western values.

Historically, the U.S. has recognized the UK’s de facto administration of the islands but has not taken a formal stance on sovereignty. Reports of a possible U.S. position change emerged in April, suggesting it could be a punitive measure against NATO allies that did not join the Iran war. Trump expressed disappointment regarding the UK's lack of military support during his presidency.

Milei's speech included a few new decrees, including accelerated sanctions against entities involved in oil extraction initiatives in the North Falkland Basin, specifically targeting a project by Israeli company Navitas and British partner Rockhopper, which he claimed contravenes a UN directive against unilateral actions in the territory.
