President Javier Milei addressed the nation, stating that "winds of change favourable" to Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands are emerging globally. He referenced comments from former President Donald Trump, suggesting that the United States may reconsider its historical stance regarding the islands' sovereignty. Milei used the Argentinian name for the islands, Malvinas, during his televised speech.

Milei asserted that the United Kingdom is currently facing significant challenges, including migratory, demographic, and economic crises, which he believes are indicative of a decline. In contrast, he described Argentina's future as promising and destined to prevail.

Earlier, Trump was asked by GB News if he would support the UK in a potential territorial dispute with Argentina, to which he hinted at a lack of support, referencing his own experiences with the UK regarding military aid during conflict with Iran.

While supporters anticipated an announcement of U.S. endorsement for Argentina's claim, Milei instead reiterated Trump's comments about reviewing the U.S. position on the issue. He characterized Trump's remarks as a "threat" that should not be taken lightly.

Milei emphasized that the U.S. is considering a change in its position because it recognizes Argentina as a reliable partner aligned with Western values and a strategically significant ally. The U.S. has historically acknowledged the UK's administrative control over the islands but has not formally taken a stance on sovereignty. Reports of a potential revision of this position surfaced in April, linked to internal Pentagon discussions regarding punitive measures against NATO allies.

During the address, Milei also announced measures to expedite sanctions against entities involved in oil extraction in the Falkland Islands, specifically targeting a project led by an Israeli company and its British partner, which he claimed contravened a UN directive against unilateral actions in the territory.
