A New South Wales couple, Venkatraman Balakrishnan, 52, and Chitra Venkatraman, 46, are among 39 Australians reported missing following severe flash flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border. They were part of a group of 15 Australians traveling to Mount Kailash for a spiritual pilgrimage. Their son, Akash Venkatraman, stated that his parents were scheduled to depart their riverside accommodation in Syabrubesi on Wednesday morning, just before the area was inundated by floodwaters. Akash has lost contact with them and is receiving considerable support from his community in Australia, emphasizing the importance of maintaining normalcy during this crisis. The group, which included members of the Australia Bharatha Brahmin Samaj, was organized by Himalayan Glacier Adventures. Sagar Pandey, the tour operator's founder, has lost all communication with his group of 47, which includes the missing Australians. As of Thursday afternoon, nearly 1,300 individuals remain unaccounted for, with Nepal police confirming 389 deaths and 466 injuries. Pandey, who surveyed the devastated Rasuwa area by helicopter, expressed little hope for the survival of those missing, stating that the flood had obliterated all signs of human life.
