Investigation and Health Response
The Argentine health ministry confirmed that since June 2025, there have been 101 reported hantavirus infections, a figure that has doubled compared to the previous year. The hantavirus responsible for this outbreak is the Andes virus, which can lead to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome—a severe and often fatal lung disease. In the last year, nearly a third of those infected with the virus died. Authorities are now working to trace the source of the contamination and have begun contact tracing for passengers who may have been exposed.
Passenger Health Status
Three passengers from the MV Hondius have died, while another is currently in intensive care in South Africa. Three additional passengers were evacuated from the ship, and one man who disembarked earlier tested positive for the virus in Switzerland. The World Health Organization reported that the first death occurred on April 11, involving a 70-year-old Dutch man. His wife later died in South Africa after collapsing at the airport.
Global Monitoring Efforts
In light of the outbreak, Argentina is collaborating with several countries, including Spain, Senegal, South Africa, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, by sending genetic material from the Andes virus and testing equipment. This international cooperation aims to help these nations detect and manage potential cases.
Concerns Over Disembarked Passengers
There is heightened concern regarding 23 passengers who disembarked on the island of Saint Helena on April 23. Reports indicate that these individuals were not contacted for health monitoring until recently, raising fears of potential further spread of the virus. American passengers who returned to the U.S. are being monitored in Georgia, California, and Arizona, although none have shown symptoms of illness so far.
Wrap-up
As the investigation continues, Argentine officials are working to identify where infected passengers traveled within the country prior to boarding the cruise ship. This information will be crucial for contact tracing efforts and for implementing necessary public health measures to prevent further transmission of the virus.
