Labor Party President Wayne Swan will step down from his position in July 2024, emphasizing the need for the Australian Labor Party (ALP) to enhance its membership for future sustainability. Swan, a prominent figure in Australian politics, made this announcement to the national executive, stating he will not seek re-election in 2026. He described his tenure as an "honour," having held the presidency since 2018 after defeating current Health Minister Mark Butler.

Under Swan's leadership, the Labor Party has achieved significant electoral success, including two consecutive victories under Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, highlighted by the party's strongest performance in over 80 years during the May 2022 federal election. Despite these accomplishments, Swan stresses that the party must prioritize increasing its membership to remain competitive.

In a statement regarding his decision, Swan noted, "Over recent years, I have worked hard to ensure the party takes action to lift and re-energise party membership." He pointed out that, while some areas show growth, many regions still require significant improvement in membership numbers, stating, "We can't always rely on good leaders and goodwill to pull us through."

Swan's career in politics began when he won the seat of Lilley in Brisbane's north in 1993. Following the Labor Party's loss in the 1996 election, he found himself in opposition but quickly ascended to the shadow cabinet in 1998, eventually becoming shadow treasurer in 2004. His political career reached a pivotal moment in 2007 when he was appointed treasurer by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd after Labor's decisive electoral win.

During his tenure as treasurer, Swan played a crucial role in navigating Australia through the global financial crisis (GFC), implementing an "economic security strategy" valued at $10 billion. His initiatives, including the stimulus package and the "Nation Building and Jobs Plan," are credited with shielding Australia from the severe economic downturn that affected many countries worldwide. In recognition of his efforts, Swan was named the world's best treasurer by Euromoney magazine in 2011.

In addition to his political career, Swan has served as chairman of Cbus, the construction industry's superannuation fund, a role he will continue after stepping down as Labor president. Throughout his career, he has been involved in significant political events, including the tumultuous Rudd-Gillard-Rudd years, during which he served as deputy prime minister under Julia Gillard from 2010 until his resignation from the frontbench in 2013. Swan remained active in federal politics for six more years in opposition before concluding his parliamentary career in the 2019 election.
